Fun Facts About Auburn
Auburn, Washington was originally called “Slaughter” after Lt. William Slaughter, who died in an Indian skirmish in 1855. In 1893, a large group of settlers from Auburn, NY moved to Slaughter and renamed the town to Auburn, Washington. The rich farm land produced hops until 1890 when aphids destroyed the crops. After that, Auburn’s farms were mostly dairy and berry, but flooding was a frequent problem. The building of the Mud Mountain Dam and the Hanson Dam in 1962 solved the problem and Auburn prospered. Today, Auburn is the 13th largest city in Washington, with a population of about 67,000 in about 16,000 households. That’s a lot of carpets to be cleaned!
Auburn is a great place to live. We have the White River Ampitheater, the Mukilshoot Casino, the SuperMall, Emerald Downs Racetrack, and the Sounder train station. We have Auburn Hospital, our Farmers Market, and our local theater. And, we’re about to begin construction downtown on “Auburn Junction” a new shopping and condominium complex. Auburn has the feel of a small town with the conveniences of a big city. And Auburn is only 20-25 minutes from downtown Seattle (depending on traffic).
