Fun Facts About Kent

Kent, Washington was first permanently settled in the 1860’s and was originally called “Titusville”. In 1885, a railroad construction engineer dubbed the city “Kent”, after Kent, England. In the 1880’s, the area was a major producer of hops. But due to an aphid infestation in 1891, the hops crop was virtually eliminated. In 1890, Kent incorporated as a city, becoming only the second in King County to do so, after Seattle. By the 1920’s, Kent became the lettuce-growing capital of the world. The agricultural abundance was due in part to seasonal flooding from the Green River and White River. But a change in the course of the White River in 1906 and the construction of the Howard Hanson dam in 1962 prevented recurring flooding.

Today, Kent covers 28.3 square miles and is the 8th largest city in Washington. There are about 80,000 residents in Kent, in about 32,000 households. That’s a lot of carpets to be cleaned!
