Fun Facts About Puyallup

In 1833 the first European, Dr. Tolmie, passed through the Puyallup valley and found a wide, wandering river frequently clogged with massive log jams and prone to floods. The valley was crisscrossed by creeks, and filled with old-growth forest, and densely packed with ferns growing to eight feet in height. The town of Puyallup was named after the local Indian tribes and means “generous people”. By the 1880's, Puyallup was a major growing region for hops. Puyallup also became known as "the land of daffodils", and was incorporated on August 19, 1890 by well-known pioneer Ezra Meeker.

Today, Puyallup covers an area of approximately 11 square miles and is the 28th largest city in Washington, with a population of over 37,000 in about 13,000 households. That's a lot of carpets to be cleaned!

Puyallup is also the home of the Western Washington Fair, which was developed to give local farmers a place to exhibit their crops and livestock. The Fair has been held in Puyallup every fall since 1900. The Puyallup Fair is now ranked the sixth largest fair in the country, with over one million visitors attending each year.

Puyallup is a great place to live and it offers much more than just The Fair! You'll also find the South Hill Mall, Meeker Mansion, Paul H. Karshner Memorial Museum, and lots of shops and restaurants for every taste. There's always something to do in Puyallup, from the Spring Daffodil Festival to the Meeker Days Festival. You can hike the Pierce County Foothills Trail or explore the regionally-famous antique district on Meridian. Listen to some great music from the Northwest Sinfonietta or relax in any of 14 city parks, including Pioneer Park. Check out the downtown outdoor arts gallery or shop at the Farmer's Market for some great deals on farm-fresh produce!

Puyallup has the feel of an old-fashioned small town with the conveniences of a big city. And Puyallup is only 30-45 minutes from downtown Seattle (depending on traffic). Or, you can take a short ride on the Sounder train from the station in downtown Puyallup to and from the Tacoma dome. At the same time, we're only an hour from Ashford, the entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park.
